Why write at work? One good reason is that the person writing the doc has a lot of power.
The person who writes down the thing has tremendous power. Independent of their actual formal role… one of the ways you find the up and comers and a tech company, it’s just like, who wrote down the plan? Marc Andreessen c/o How I Write podcast
Why is this?
You get to choose the anchor points of a first draft. Because change is hard, people will bias towards keeping what you put down in a first draft.
And if you’re on the same page with leadership about the big picture, then you get to fill in the details. And some details really matter.
Because writing clarifies and sharpens ideas, your ideas will be at the margin because they are written down, and people will assume so.
P.S. Feeling bored is your fault — if you feel bored at work, consider writing a doc about a topic you keep hearing people talk about.
